Why are we doing this?

We want to help civilian audiences to better understand what it’s like to be a forces child today. Forces children are obviously the experts, so we’re going to work with them directly to co-produce a campaign.

For the young people who get involved, the project will provide a creative opportunity to share their lived experience and co-create a powerful campaign that will help people understand the lives they lead.

What will we do and where?

To begin with, we will work together for seven days during the summerholidays – Monday 18th to Sunday 24th July 2022. You’ll need to be available for the whole week.

We’ll be staying at Edinburgh Napier University for the week. The group will be supervised at all times; we’ll be working together during the day, then in the evenings there will be qualified youth workers on hand to look after everyone. Effervescent will organise transport and food.

Intotalthere’ll be about twenty of us in the team, a mixture of young people aged 13-19 professionals.

If you’re under 18, we’ll get in touch with your parent/guardian to make sure they have all the details and that we have their consent for you to attend.

The sessionswill be a mixture of thinking and researching, combined with being quite playful and experimenting with creative ideas together. It’s a group effort where everyone is helped to feel confident and to take part fully;this is a place where you can be yourself.

A few weeks later we’ll spend another weekend working on our ideas together – Saturday 20th  and Sunday 21st August. This time though we’ll get together remotely using Zoom. Don’t worry if you don’t have access to a computer or very good internet, we can help with that.

Afterthat we’ll stay intouch and develop the campaign together over a few months; you can get involved in whichever parts you’re interested in when you have time.

“ One thing about being part of the creative team is that you’re always learning new things. Whether that’s from people within the team or people that we’ve hired from outside. ”

I’m quite shy - can I still take part?

Absolutely.Everyone will help each other during the week. We’ll also do lots of creative activities that are designed to build your confidence and help you make friends.

“ It made me feel like I’m part of something bigger. It feels like I've got a family that understand and know how I feel and have felt. ”

What will the campaign look like?

This is a brand new campaign, so we don’t know what it will look like! With Effervescent’sexpert support, it will be up to the new team to design the campaign. What we do know is that this is a really innovative project, and that young people from serving, reservist and veteran families across Scotland will come up with something amazing.

You can see some other the other campaigns that Effervescent have co-designed with young people here.

Do I have to pay?

No you’re a volunteer, we don’t expect you to pay for anything.

Forces Children Scotland will cover the cost of accommodation, travel and food.

Do I need to have done this before?

No! You just need to be enthusiastic and have an interest in creativity – things like art, design, advertising, performance, music, creative writing and maybe even psychology.

What will I get out of it?

First of all, we hope you’ll have a great time! You’ll meet new people and do things you may not otherwise get the chance to. We also hope you’ll learn some new skills that could help with your career. You never know. There may also be opportunities to help with promoting the campaign through media appearancesbut only if you want to!

How to get involved

Please complete our application form by Sunday 19th June

There are a limited number of places available, and we need to make sure the group has a balance of different people with different experiences and different lives.

If your application is selected, we’ll let you know and then ask you for the name of a trusted adult (teacher, youth worker, etc.) who can tell us more about you and help us make sure this is the right project for you.

If your application doesn’t get through, we’ll let you know.If you don’t get invited to take part, it will be because we had to balance the group in terms of ages, backgrounds, experiences, etc.  We’ll let you know if there are any other ways to get involved with the campaignlater on.

If you’d like a chat before completing the form, you can call Phil at Effervescent on 07592 539 823.
