Effervescent wins City Centre Company of the Year 2015

Last night, we won the Best City Centre Company of the Year 2015 at the prestigious Plymouth Herald City and Waterfront Awards last night.

There were 17 public-voted categories of awards, but the judges also selected three businesses to honour with special peer-voted awards.  Introducing the City Centre Company of the Year category, Plymouth City Centre Company Manager, Jon Walton said of Effervescent, “These guys are the unsung heroes of Plymouth City Centre, not only for their astonishing contribution to Plymouth City Centre, but for their complete dedication and commitment to communities all over the South West.”

Accepting the award, our Director Eloise Malone said “We are so honoured to have been recognised by the City Centre Company with this award.  It’s the result of more than ten years work helping thousands of children and young people of Plymouth through our creative programmes, and also the recent success of our tea parlour and bistro RumpusCosy and our gallery Radiant.  We are proud to be a successful social enterprise in Britain’s number one social enterprise city and look forward to continuing to thrive in a city that values cultural endeavour.”

Effervescent is based in Radiant, a building we developed with the help of the local community in 2014: on site we also have offices for creatives, a studio, and a tea parlour-by-day, vintage bistro-by-night, RumpusCosy.  Radiant is the only gallery space in the UK that is permanently co-curated and produced by children and young people – many of whom have had no prior involvement with professional arts or artists.  RumpusCosy was a finalist in the Herald City and Waterfront Awards 2015 in the Best Café/Fast Food category, and the Radiant Christmas Grotto was named one of the Top Ten Visitor Attractions in the UK in 2014.

Our work reaches live audiences of approximately 12,000 – 30,000 people annually and we work intensively (with our partner Barnardo’s) with around 200 young people in Plymouth each year to help transform lives and help them recover from misfortune.  Effervescent works with and is supported by key partners Arts Council England, Plymouth City Council, and Plymouth University.  We are also funded by public donation, and by grants from BIG Lottery, Swarthmore Foundation, and BBC Children in Need.
